BentBow: You are a great American. Thank you for your advice.

Jaybrown: I appreciate your insight and will investigate our options. Your response sort of goes beyond the scope of the information I was after, but again, thank you. oh, and its spelled 'business'.

And the sentence you corrected my spelling in should begin with a capital letter and should use the contraction "it's" when you mean "it is".

"Oh, and it's spelled 'buisness'." See, now we are both grammar Nazis.

Spelling and Grammar are two subjects. I opted to slack on the formalities.

I guess....as far as I can see you actually did spell "its" wrong, so I guess you failed both subjects! Best of luck to you in your home buisness though.

Do we need to have some sort of business permit to do this? I know at my other jobs, I've seen posters that display labor laws and regulations. We don't want to get in trouble with the city/state.
Typically you wouldn't need a business license unless you had employees. Plus you and your friend are partnering together, so you would need something to show that partnership....if you have employees you need an tax I'd number and maybe a trademark license (federal..... if your business will be operated across state lines such as an online business or having clients from other states).depending on the nature of work, you may also need liability insurance. To avoid all of this headache, I would start off with NO employees or use an online outsourcing company (there may be some stipulations to this as well). Use your birth name for the business that way you won't have to file for a trademark (which can cost up to $400). Then, later on you could get employees. Also, there may be laws about operating a business in your home with employees. Check with your state"s main website.
