Default Austin High vs. Bowie

We will be moving to Austin shortly and are down to choosing a few homes. One of the homes would have my children attending Austin High and the other would be Bowie. I would really love some input on both schools. Academics and teacher/ parent communication is really important for me. My sons are both really athletic (1 in football & 1 in basketball) and I would for them to continue with a nice athletic program as they been with in their current school, also we are AA so I would like some diversity as well. Any input would greatly be appreciated.

Austin and Bowie seem comparable in academics, but, I know Bowie is better with athletics.

Austin will be more diverse!

It is a tossup. Both are considered excellent schools.

I agree.

I think either school will work well for you. Bowie is probably more competitive in athletics. Austin has a more diverse student body. Both have broad curriculum and a lot of extra-curricular choices.

That said, if you're looking in SW Austin in Legend Oaks area, near the Austin/Bowie cutoff, you should factor in that SW Austin is more "Bowie-Centric". So, if it's a toss-up between the homes in that area, you'll feel more like you are living in the "Bowie Community".

Bowie is rated higher in purely academic terms (Academically "Recognized" vs. Academically "Acceptable" in the case of Austin High), which may surprise some folks. I agree that it's probably a toss-up when you consider academics and athletics. Lake Travis may be your best bet when it comes to combining academics and athletics, if you can swing the commute. It may be close enough just to consider which house is the better deal.

If your children are into music, the Bowie marching band is truly exceptional. By that I mean, most years they take trips to the Rose Bowl Parade, Fiesta Bowl, or other events of that caliber. Go to a Bowie football game some Friday night and see for yourself. Be warned, though, being a member of the Bowie band involves a big commitment of time!
