Well, we're heading to Austin in a couple of weeks. Here's hoping we find a decent place to rent. We're starting out with a 45,000 salary for a 6 month probationary period and the new boss said at the end of that as long as my hubby does what he says he can do (which he will) then he's looking at a salary of between 50 and 60,000.

[quote=Danimarie;23187773] My husband has someone in Hudson Bend, TX looking to negotiate pay and moving expenses.
I'm trying to figure out where are the good and bad areas.

How much will rent be for a decent 3 bedroom apartment, townhouse, or house? Any places you recommend? Any other costs I need to be aware of?

I'm feeling rather clueless. I've only lived in 2 cities before and the biggest city I ever lived in was 100,000 or so people.

Thanks![/quotes]

There are really no "bad parts" of Austin, unless you count petty crimes, but there are places that are more "built" up. For example, the East and South side of Austin are the oldest parts of the city, while North Austin is newer. If you like more of the city life, then I would suggest moving in downtown Austin, but you will pay a fortune for a 3 bedroom townhouse/condo/home. If you like the quiet life, then I would suggest moving to Southwest Austin. These are where the native Austin people live. Southwest austin is the home to a lot of schools, parks, etc. It is very quiet and safe with a lot of land. I consider it to be "country" and love it.

You can find a 3 bedroom in Southwest Austin for about $1200+. There are cheaper parts of town, but it wouldn't be considered the best area, such as Northeast and Southeast Austin. Northeast Austin has a lot of 'petty crimes' (no violent crimes) such as car theft, etc. If you have kids, avoid this area.
