Hi- can't really help you but did a quick google search using "Austin AIDS services" and quite a few resources came up. Try AIDS Services of Austin: and The Octopus Club | Benefiting AIDS Services of Austin You can probably network through those organizations and find more info.

Welcome to Austin!

unfortunately austin and texas in general is a low service state. While there is some assistance, you might be better off focusing on areas that do a much better job of this.

I can't help you either with your main question, but just thought I'd mention that I've always been skeptical of the lists that suggest Austin as a great place for retirement. I love Austin, but it is a town and state that have no income taxes but instead derives income from very high sales and property taxes. It also has high housing costs. That just sounds like the exact opposite of what I'd be looking for as a retiree who would have low income but still need to buy things and live somewhere.

Shouldn't lists looking out for retirees name places that have high income taxes and little to no sales and property tax, and low housing costs? Austin seems like a needlessly expensive place for retirees to live.

From a tax perspective buffetjr is spot on. My in-laws retired to Austin (from CA) but they felt that the lower cost of living and their general enjoyment of the area off-set the property tax hike ... but they are also still "productive" and probably have some income as well, though I doubt that was a major consideration.

There is also the over 65 exemption but it's really just postponing what you owe to a point when you no longer care. Better than nothing!

If you are living on a fixed income then Austin (and much of TX) has a strike against it. Doesn't seem to be stopping people around Lake Travis, though...pretty good sized older demographic there.
