Hi all,

Any tips on good places to watch the meteor showers from this weekend?

Thanks!

Colorado.

Just kidding.

Mount Bonnell maybe? I think its the highest point in the metro area. Seems far enough away from downtown so you'd still get good visibility.

Probably one of those hills you can hike up on either side of the PennyBacker bridge would be great. Very little light from the city over there.

Enchanted Rock if you want a drive and make it a trip.

Darkness is most important. Get as far away from street lights and city light pollution as you can.

I agree. We watched them once from Spicewood, but we were out visiting a friend. There aren't really any public places out there to hang after dark. I think the Narrows is a day use only park. You could pay the $15 fee to camp at Pace Bend and stay as long as you like. You really need to get about 30 minutes outside the city to see them really well.

Meteorites tend to hit the east side of the Earth's atmosphere more often as that is the direction Earth is moving in as it orbits around the sun. So any area with a good view towards the east, with no city light glare in that direction is likely to be the best.

Also, to be noted... pre-dawn hours hours are the best... and this year's peaks are expected to be on the 11th - 13th...
"As always, after midnight is the best time for meteor-watching. The moon will be there, but getting thinner every morning. On the mornings (not the evenings) of August 11, 12 and 13, the moon will be a waning crescent, and the meteors should be flying at a rate closer to their peak of 50 or 60 meteors per hour. As an added treat – on August 11, 12 and 13 – the moon will be sweeping past the brightest planets Venus and Jupiter in the eastern predawn sky."
