Not sure what you're protecting against; but there is a pre-taped 'drop cloth' used for taping off areas for painting and having a bit of a 'skirt' made of very thin plastic(VERY low-mil but might help). Any home improvement/paint store would have it...maybe even Target or Wally-mart.

For anything more serious/long-term, I'm afraid the adhesive might be as damaging as the scratches.

If these are animal scratches, good luck to you!

I'd check with the people at Home Depot or Lowes. Tell them what you want to do, they will suggest a way to do it.

JoAnn's fabrics sells vinyl by the roll. Maybe you can get it cut to the size of your table, but I'm not sure how to get it to adhere to the wood.

My mother has an antique wood Chinese table, and she had a sheet of glass fitted to cover the top. It slid around occasionally, but it wasn't a nuisance. Growing up, my siblings and I knew not to slide it completely off the table, and we knew how to adjust it if it slid.

Also found this on the Home Depot website. Not sure if it will fit your need, though:

There is a sticky plastic you can put down over rugs...is that what the friend was referring to? I found several doing a search on sticky plastic film.
