Heya! Thinking of moving to Austin from Kerrville. I’d be fine with living someplace fairly far from the city center. I have very little interest in things like nightlife, really, and I don’t need there to be a ton of shops and events and such. What I am looking for is someplace with a low crime rate, where rent is in the $500-650 range if you have a roommate, where there’s some nature and it’s not too built up, where the general population tends fairly liberal (which unfortunately puts some of the otherwise-nice more rural suburbs out of the question), and ideally where there’s decent public transport (but that one isn’t as much of a requirement as the rest). Low-ish cost of living would be nice but I know most areas of Austin will be at least somewhat more expensive than Kerrville.

Nope. There’s little to no public transportation outside of sifting proper. Anything that’s outside of Austin will lean more conservative.

St Johns and Rundberg along the 325 and 300 bus routes will get you all of your criteria except crime and maybe noise. Maybe around LBJ high school around the 20 route will get you there, but I don't think you'll get in under 1200/month.

Places in Manor/Buda/Taylor etc. may get you there, with exception of public transport.

Maybe if you find a shared bathroom 2/1 east of Springdale or in Montopolis, you may also be able to hit your budget.

Yeah. Maybe ring up Doc and Marty and see if you can borrow the Delorean. That ship sailed so long ago it’s basically in orbit now.

Not sure if you’ve been in the rental market lately but most of those areas, even in the shabbiest of states is like $800-900 at least per room. Montopolis is not as cheap as you’d think. There are small 800 sq ft houses renting for $1800 a month near me. My new complex is renting the smallest second floor unit for $1530 right now.

We initially looked at renting before buying and we never saw rents in the $500-$600 range per roommate in Austin. Maybe someone else will be able to chime in with more helpful info.

I actually gave a Uber ride to someone last night who had a rent of $500 per roommate but it was 3 roommates in a 2br apt. It was an older apartment off of Duval non-renovated but near Domain.

It can be done, but it’ll be situations like that and might be near Rundberg/Lamar type of situation.
