I guess now that I know there are vegan restaurants, I just need to know the overall quality of life and the diversity of Austin. For instance, I wanted to move to CA to be close to the beach and be able to have outdoor activities. I know Austin is nowhere near the beach, but could I spend a lot of time outside enjoying the weather?

And it would be nice to meet other vegans-- maybe if I hung out with people involved on the alternative music scene or something-- someone was telling me how awesome austin is as far as music goes. I wonder if it would be like finding a needle in a haystack?
It was 75 & sunny here today and the 117,000 fans who attended the first ever F1 US Grand Prix held in Austin (southeast of town) seemed to enjoy the weather.

A Fan Fest music festival was held this weekend in a closed off section downtown.

Yes, it's a very outdoorsy city even when it gets into triple digits in the summer. People go to the lake, bike, hike, walk the extensive trails, and go to the different springs and natural fed pools.

Here's a blog on a few places to go Outdoor Activities in Austin TX
If you google it, you can find a ton more options. We aren't California so we shouldn't be compared.

If you live near East Cesar Chavez you have two great options: Mr. Natural and Counter Culture.

Not the safest area at night, there are better areas on the east side to live but those are two excellent places to eat!

I know the owners of Mr. Natural and some of the staff. The young women don't seem to be scared of working on E. Cesar Chavez. There's nothing scary about that area, just brown people living over there (for now). Don't let people scare you with imaginary boogie men.

I've lived here three years. The crime rate using APD's crime viewer is comparable to my old neighborhood in 78745. I don't think you know what you are talking about.

Ha! If you say so, difference of opinion then. I'll just reiterate and say there are safer areas to be in but it does have a great proximity to downtown and it is near some great restaurants.

What about the non-imaginary 2011 statistics for the 78702 zip code?:
3 - Murders
15 - Rapes
95 - Robberies
153 - Aggravated Assaults
336 - Burglaries
1,564 - Thefts
97 - Stolen Vehicles
10 - Arson

Back in the 80's I used to cruise east Los Angeles after a night of partying looking for taco trucks. Nothing ever happened and I had no fear whatsoever, but that didn't mean it was a safe area to be in at 2am.

The east side has fantastic people,(whatever color you want to call them) communities and IMHO some the the best looking homes in Austin. I believe the OP was just making the point to people who have not ventured to that area to be cautious.
