My husband finally got offered a job in Austin! We're thrilled. It's been hard job hunting from another state! We close on a house there on Nov. 9, so we'll be on our way down soon.
As we were shivering in our car this morning I told my kids how it's never "cold like this in Austin". They are so excited to never wear gloves and boots again. Goodbye Salt Lake City snow! (although I will miss the mountains)
I'm so appreciative to everyone for all the great advice. I feel so well-informed.

I just want to say that is does get cold in the winter. Are winters are just MUCH shorter than most. They are only a couple of weeks long. But it can get cold. Now not many here own gloves n' boots. But I would not promise them that it is never going to get cold. It will eventually, trust me.

Yeah, don't get rid of those mountain-winter clothes yet.
You won't ever need most of them in Texas - but you also can't GET them in Texas, if you ever do need them again.
Feel free, however, to destroy your snow shovel in a fit of warm-climate glory.

Welcome to Austin!

Well, I am glad you were not here earlier this year where we had to use our "snow clothing and a shavel" to remove the 1.5" thick ice on top of our cars...

And yes you WILL miss the mountains... even if you live in the "Hill Country"

Good luck,
Carlos

Congratulations and welcome! Wish you could've been here today...91, clear and dry. Loved it! What part of Austin did you decide to live in?

That ice storm last year is just a typical freezing rain type of day during a normal winter here in the "D". That utube video of it is hilarious..

We were really hoping to live in the SW area (Highpointe or Belterra), but my husbands job is on 35 and 360 and that would have been at least 30-40 minutes. So we looked at Cedar Park instead. My husband drove the commute a couple of times when he was down there and it was 15-20 minutes. Much better.
We found a great house for an excellent price. With six kids, we don't fit in many houses, so we need the most sq. footage we can get for the money. The neighborhood seems to have a lot of kids (Deer Creek Ranch. Excuse me, The Ranch at Deer Creek. Is it me, or is everyone getting tired of neighborhood names with prepositions?), so we're happy. I'm excited that the shopping and movies are a lot closer than they would have been out near Dripping Springs.
