Really y'all, it's not.

I mean seriously, Austin is by far the least diverse big city in Texas(fact). It just has great P.R., but can we please be real about this.

I lived in Austin for over a year(I loved it!) but it is very far from being diverse unless you compare it to Midland, Amarillo, Salt Lake, Portland, or Seattle.

It is very layed back yes, racially and culturally diverse NO!

I know some people will take offense to this but its the HONEST truth.

There is more to diversity than just race. It is my opinion that Austin is very diverse: culturally, politically, sexually, etc.

I agree with JRead and please don't lump in Seattle with that group as this is a sophisticated cosmopolitan city with plenty of diversity.

Seattle diverse? Not racially, and I think this is what the OP is getting at. Check the stats - Seattle is something like over 60% caucasian, with asian and pacific islander a distant second - and everything else drops far down in percentages.

Seattle, like Austin is exactly what jread said - "very diverse: culturally, politically, sexually, etc."

Not so much, racially, for either city - but I agree with jread in that there is more to diversity than ethnicity.

Diversity is a relative term. To you it might not seem diverse; to another person with different life experiences it may seem very diverse.

I guess I would ask you what you mean by 'diverse'? Ethnic? Economic? Sexual preference? Education? What?

This is why diversity sucks. *lol* So many think that is only means race.

From Merriam Webster Online:

DIVERSITY
Pronunciation:
\də-ˈvər-sə-tē, dī-\
Function:
noun
Inflected Form(s):
plural di·ver·si·ties
Date:
14th century

1: the condition of being diverse : variety; especially : the inclusion of diverse people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization <programs intended to promote diversity in schools>2: an instance of being diverse <a diversity of opinion>

It not only includes race, but cultures....people who just happen to think differently from others--and Austin has plenty of those!

No. I will not stop saying the word "diverse." I will not staying "hello" to my neighbor or "good morning" to my co-workers. I damn sure won't stop saying "Hi Mom" to my mother.

Where do you get off on trying to control what I say to who I want to? Please, go outside and yell at the top of your lungs "I Want To Go To Amarillo." That will impress the neighbors.

If you want to tell me Austin sucks - fine. If you want to state the reasons why, please do. That helps me work towards fixing something that can or may be broken. But attempting (and rather poorly at that) to control how I conjugate a sentence - you are way off base and you should apologize.

Your arrogance is appalling.

It's all relative. It is /not/ the least diverse city in Texas. I moved here from the valley, and Austin's at least five times more diverse.

Wow, I really wasn't trying to offend anyone on this board, just relaying how I felt about your great city.

I lived in South Austin, and I dug it

its just not what I consider diverse, racially, ethically, or culturally. Yes there are people who live what some would consider an alternative lifestyle and of course it's gonna be politically diverse because it is the capitol, but other than that i didn't see it.

The problems with APD, I-35 acting as railroad tracks a la "In the Heat of the Night" style, lack of diversity in eating establishments, night spots, etc..........
