Hello! I'm considering moving here around the end of next year (2014) after graduation (social worker), and I was wondering if you all had any advice on what area I should consider, not consider, etc. I am single, 21, female, very outgoing, no kids, like quiet neighborhoods, not a nightlife person (I don't club, party, etc.), and will need a bible teaching church home. I know it's a little early, but I just want to prepare. ANY ADVICE?

Find a job first. Social work jobs are very few and far between.

Completely agree. UT School of Social Work graduates master's level social workers every year and competition is fierce. It is already low-paying profession (IMO) and the salaries are even lower here because employers can pick the best of the best without the lure of higher wages. A single social worker vacancy in a country-run program I am familiar with drew almost 300 applicants! Granted, not all were qualified, but many, many were and some were highly qualified.

I concur with the above two posts. I'm assuming you'll be a bachelor's level degree, correct? You might want to go ahead and get enrolled into a graduate program (UT, St. Ed's, Texas State, wherever) and then get either your LMSW or LCSW, because you'll be competing for jobs against experienced people with those degrees/licenses. As said above, UT School of Social Work churns out tons of graduates who are already somewhat connected, and Austin is HUGELY competitive for all types of jobs. I just posted a position for a Program Specialist III with the state, that didn't require a degree but it was preferred, and I had over 200 applications for it. With that said, definitely consider state employment too, even though you'll probably have to play the numbers game with the applications until you get called for an interview. People often say state pay is low, but it is quite competitive when you're considering professional level jobs and you get amazing benefits. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Supervisor who is also an 18-year state employee...worked all over the state for several different agencies, and Austin is definitely the most difficult place to move between jobs.

Feel free to ask or message me with any other questions you may have.
