I am looking to leave CO have 12 years of high tech/telecom sales and just wondering what the market is like there. I have seen and heard good things about Austin.

If you have a track record of selling successfully, I think you should not have difficulty finding a "tech" sales job.

Avoid Dell though.

The answer is that it really depends. Software will be more prevalent than hardware (very few HW Sales jobs out here), and competition for these jobs can be pretty tight. Many are going to be smaller/start-up companies with low base/high commission or equity stake type of comp arrangements. Now that said, Austin - and Texas as a whole - is relatively devoid of a big candidate pool of true sales professionals, so there can be competition in numbers, but not necessarily in scope or scale.

I know my Ladders.com morning email always has quite a few sales and business development positions that are software or "tech service" types of companies.

Dallas has a few more of the bigger company/regional positions.

Might be worth registering for ladders.com I'm loath to pay anything for job listings, but it does keep them a bit more exclusive and you can target some higher-end positions. I think it's $40 for 3 months if you want to do the short-term one.

The good thing is that it's pretty easy to network in Austin, since folks tend to be pretty social. Moving from CO to TX could be a serious shock though! Although, we aren't on fire out here!

Just because Austin doesn't have many HW companies doesn't mean there isn't a need for HW sales people in Austin. Austin companies buy a lot of hardware from the usual suppliers (HP, Dell, IBM, Sun, EMC, etc.). And the buy a lot of software too. So the employer might not be based in Austin. Could be San Jose, Boston, or Seattle.

Thanks both I have sold HW, SW, telecom, pretty much anything hi tech B2B.

I actually tried to see if Dell, lol, had any account manager or high end customer service jobs to get my foot in door and nope they all appear to be offshore.

I would really like to sell HW or SW because telecom is slowly dying as wireless gets better.

Oracle and Google both have significant sales offices here. Google sells B2B services here (like maps). I saw an article recently that stated Dell is going private to compete on price without the quarterly presurres to win marketshare. Could be a high risk high reward situation for a sales guy.

Any good referrals for IT sales recruiters in Austin?

I'm also considering relo'ing there and wouldn't be opposed to working with a solid recruiter or two.
