For those of you of a "certain age", two of Austin's best loved bands of the late Sixties are appearing together Friday at Threadgills South. First up, at 9, is the Vulcan Gas Company house band, Shiva's Headband. Then, at 10, probably the best selling of all the Texas psychedelic bands, Bubble Puppy.

Tickets available in advance here.

Yeah, I'd love to see Bubble Puppy, but it's past my bedtime. Someone please report back and let me know how it was!

At the time, I wouldn't doubt that (statewide and nationwide, at least!)-"Hot Smoke & Sassafras" hit #14 in Billboard. "You're Gonna Miss Me," for comparison's sake hit either #65 or #56? (Don't ask me, I wasn't alive then! Bucking the oldster trend I guess...) However, in the decades since, there's no doubt in my mind the Elevators have run laps around Bubble Puppy

If you mean Roky Erickson as the totality of the Elevators, then yes. But the Elevators haven't performed intact since '69.

Or did you mean most influential, etc?

Watch for yourself.

It was great - Ron Olivera did the intro.

Whoops, yes, I did mean influential, posthumous sales, tributes, general awareness, etc.

The Elevators did do at least one show with Roky, Tommy, and Stacy in 1972 when Roky got out of Rusk though. It's on the "Death In Texas" disc in the gargantuan 10 CD Elevators box that came out a few years ago. It's about as cohesive as a performance as you'd expect from those guys at that time frame, but does have a couple of otherwise unreleased Elevators songs...I don't count the 1984 "reunion gig" bootleg (excluded from the 10 disc box) that has Roky's band with John Ike Walton and maybe one other ex-Elevator sitting in as authentic and I don't think most people would either. Too bad nobody's made a similarly exhaustive retrospective for Bubble Puppy and all of their forms/relatives over the years-Bad Seeds, Demian, Sirius, Ring Of Power, D-Day (hey, David Fore drummed for them anyway!), etc. I missed the show Friday though!

Doug Sahm died in 1999. Augie Myers still plays in Doug's last group, Texas Tornados, with Doug's son Shawn.
