Can anyone give me info on the rural towns out that way? We're looking at relocating to a property with 15-30 acres and have noticed land is cheaper out by Lampasas, Kempner, Topsy, and Lometa. My husband works in Cedar Park so anything close to 183 and no longer than an hour commute. I don't know much about that area, can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

The commute will be significantly increased if you go north of Lampasas. That 'little' stretch from Lometa thru Lampasas can take 30 minutes easily if you miss/catch the lights in town. The speed limits are no joke up there...I've been stopped for 4mph over the limit...in a VOLVO

can you be more specific in what you are looking for? They are pretty generic towns, not much to say about them.

I've been in Lampasas a little bit. They've got a well kept downtown area, some nice parks, and a HEB. It's my understanding that people who live there typically commute to Killeen/Fort Hood, not to Cedar Park. When accidents happen on 183 up there, there's nothing to do but sit and wait for them to get cleared. It can be a real pain. You couldn't find something in Liberty Hill, Jonestown, Lago Vista or Bertram?

I'm sorry I wasn't more specific. I guess I'm looking more for crime rate and conditions of the towns. I've heard Killeen is higher in crime and didn't know if that stretched out further to the West or not. Do they consist of mainly farmers and ranchers or military families? How are the hospitals? I know some towns can be exclusive, others more friendly to outsiders coming in. I plan on driving up there this next week to take a look around myself but was curious if anyone on here had first hand knowledge or experience of the area.
Mesmer, we are also looking in those areas but as I said, you can get more bang for your buck further north. Just exploring our options. :-)

Crime information can be found elsewhere on city-data:
http://www.city-data.com/city/Lampasas-Texas.html
http://www.city-data.com/city/Kempner-Texas.html
http://www.city-data.com/city/Lometa-Texas.html

These are pretty small towns, so crime is going to be pretty low. It looks like Lampasas will have a bad year here and there but nothing too crazy.

I've driven through Lometa but I honestly can't remember it at all. Google street view is a good way to look around without being there and it looks like some of the main roads have that feature available.

Lampasas has its own newspaper so that might help you with the character of the area: Front Page | www.lampasasdispatchrecord.com | Lampasas Dispatch Record

You might have better luck in the Texas forum. Those towns aren't really part of the Austin area - even the census puts them with Killeen.
