We have family coming in to town that want BBQ. We usually eat at Salt Lick. Any recommendations for the best BBQ in Austin, preferably downtown or central, possibly south. Looking for a decent place to eat, not order at the counter.

The reason I am asking is because I only go to Salt Lick and don't even know which new ones have opened up. This is a valid question. We don't eat bbq very often so I'm not aware even though I have lived here for years.

Two sources I really respect, Mike Sutter and Matthew Odam just considered the state of barbecue in Austin.

Mike Sutter's top ten.

Matthew Odam's top ten.

Both have me convinced I need to try Brown's on S Lamar.

And, now that you mention it, you order at the counter, as well. (Trying really hard to think of a BBQ place where you don't other than Salt Lick, really. Maybe Iron Works?)

North Lamar close to Justin Ln has always been considered central Austin. Nearly everyone I know thinks central Austin ends (northbound) at 183 otherwise known as Research Blvd. Go to Stiles Switch and avoid the long lines. Happy eating!

Yes, it was the request not to order at the counter that has confused me. Iron Works is great and central but as best I remember it is counter order. I would second Stiles Switch too, what is "central" these days is in the eye of the beholder.
