The job I"m looking at offers a relocation package to most major cities and Austin is one of them. I like how it is progressive, young, and growing, but I feel like it is kind of isolated from everything. Denver, Portland, and Las Vegas are at least close to stuff. I also don't like the state of Texas or anything associated with it lol. I do like warm weather and does Austin have palm trees?

If you don't like Austin, why would you come here? Isolated from what? There's everything around. Yes, there are palm trees at individual people's houses, not lining the highways like you see in other areas. They are not native to here.

No, no palm trees. We have oak and cedar, mostly with others mixed in. There's even the occasional cactus.

Austin is still very much in Texas. It's the capital. If you don't like Texas or anything associated with it, this would be a bad choice.

But is Austin still a liberal city? I'm not a big fan of suburban strip mall sprawl either.

Does your company offer a relo to Europe? Suburbs are kind of all over the US.

& if you "don't like Texas", do not move to texas.

Sounds like Portland, Denver or Las Vegas would be better options for you.

What are the biggest pros about Austin

The "pros" of any place are completely dependent on what you need. Austin does have a native palm, but it slowly gets to be 6 or 8 feet tall. People do try to grow non-natives, with varying success. This is not southern California - you won't see lines of palms down the street.

There is a pervasive myth out there that Austin is so different from the rest of Texas that people who would otherwise dislike living in Texas could be happy in Austin. The culture of Austin is, of couse, different from Dallas or Houston, but it is still just as much a part of the state as those cities. People need to be less naive about accepting such urban myths. If you "don't like the state of Texas or anythimg associated with it," why would you move here? Be good to yoursef, and live in a city and a state that you admire and enjoy. You will find more people with your values, make more friends, and generally be happier. Don't set yourself up for misery. Relocating should be a hopefully, optimistic act, not a test of whether you can make it in the wrong place. Life is short. Set yourself up for happiness.

- No pro sports.
- We don't suffer fools gladly.
- We think that liberal hypocrites are just as full of sh** as conservative hypocrites.
- Our music is better than Nashville....& it has been since 1974...or 73.
- Our State Capital is bigger than yours, our School Tower is longer than yours....seriously get a tape measure out.
- Our BBQ doesn't need sauce. (& is better than yours)
- Our Mexican food is so authentic it's called Tex/Mex (& it's better than yours).
- We eat breakfast tacos instead of breakfast burritos....and the best ones are under 2 bucks.
- Our city is located in Texas.
- Our politicians are just as corrupt and/or as clueless as yours are (but they're not socialists...ok, maybe a couple of local ones are, but they're becoming marginalized).
- You'll see more flip flops worn at business meetings than neckties.
- No state income tax (& no safety net & we don't want one).
- Nice river, nice trails, nice downtown, nice downtown parks, nice music venues, nice little towns nearby, nice hills (so nice we call it a hill country), nice people (except for the ones who move here & complain about our lack of a safety net & lack of mass transit - & want to spend billions on each - and also those who don't use their turn signal indicator).

But you don't like Texas, you shouldn't move here.

My ex husband once said.... "the only thing wrong with Austin is you have to drive through Texas to get here". Seeing as how he never lived in Texas I wondered why he felt that way. Have you ever lived in Texas? It isn't a bad state. Though I do wonder how our new Governor is going to work out.
