Hello everyone! I graduate in December and will obtain a certificate in Special education soon after. I am trying to decide which city is best for me. I would like to live in a cheap apartment in a safe area also.
I'm black, atheist, run daily, interested in health and fitness, highly interested in veganism.

Thanks in advance!

What is your definition of cheap? That may be a deciding factor.

Yay! My first answer!
$700 or less. I'm open to relocating to other Texas cities. Austin and Houston are my top choices.

You might get a 400 sq. ft. efficiency or rented room in a house for that price in Austin. Otherwise, you can get on a waiting list for low income apartment complexes. You'll want to avoid places on the Repeat Offender Registration List. These places have issues such as no hot water for months and unsafe building structures.

Look into roommates for either city. $700 can be found in the outskirts of either city but then you aren't living in Austin or Houston. and youd still have to be pretty far out for that price or very lucky. In addition the inexpenaive outskirts of texas major cities dont tend to have nicer places to run or much in terms of night life or restaurants

If you are young do what you can to live in either city as you will enjoy them. Both cities (living actually inside them) are more similar than dissimilar. Houston more international vs austin more Texan

Look into San Antonio as well. Unlike Houston and Austin they have several districts within the city limits. There are several threads about the education system there. I will echo what others have said about the rent.

Austin is the most expensive city in Texas. You won't find a rent like that here unless you're willing to share.

I'm not sure what being an atheist has to do with finding a place to live.

My daughter moved to Houston to begin her teaching career a couple of years ago. Good in many ways. But when shopping for a new mattress she was accosted by a saleslady who asked her if "she'd found a church yet." She found that highly presumtuous and filed it away under "nunya." They like to wear their religion on their sleeve, down there, apparently.
