We found it on the ground in the greenbelt behind our house. We watched for a while to see if a mom was around and no sign of her. (I know sometimes if they fall out of the nest, mom will keep feeding them). No sign of mom, and no way this little guy would make it through the night with all the snakes and other critters we have in the greenbelt. Also wasn't anywhere near a tree to look for a nest. Called Austin Area Wildlife Rescue hotline and am waiting for a call back. Called our vet who said we should keep it inside and keep trying Wildlife Rescue. But we need to know what kind of bird it is. Please help! Looked all over the web and can't find it.

Yes, I think it is! We were able to (we think) identify it after I posted this. We are keeping her safe and warm and just waiting for the wildlife rescue folks to call back. According to the internet, if you find a baby quail like this, you should bring it inside and call wildlife rescue (they will not survive long on their own). Glad we did the right thing and didn't kidnap some poor bird from her mom.

She is absolutely the cutest thing. I hope she makes it.

Is it calling for Mom? You may want to put it near a window and see if Mom does actually come looking. Anyway, baby quail need help drinking and eating.

How to care for baby quails
It has not shut up LOL. It's a noisy little thing. We left it where we found it for a couple hours yesterday, kept a close eye on him, and there were no signs of mom or other babies nearby. We brought it in when it got dark. No way it would have survived the night; it would have gotten too cold or been a nice meal for one of the many snakes back there. Apparently, if you find a baby quail (or more than one) with no mom around, it's not a good thing as mommy quails don't leave them alone.

Heard back from the wildlife rescue folks this morning. They said something probably happened to the rest of his family. We are taking him over there later this morning. They will take care of him and let him go when he gets older. Oh, and we named him Alistair.
