Austin does have a great deaf community. My next door neighbors are both hearing impaired and work at the Texas School for the Deaf. Welcome to the Texas School for the Deaf I know they and their two children are very actively involved in the community.

If you would like to send me your email address with any specific questions in a private message I would be happy to forward it to them and ask if they would contact you.

That would be wonderful. I can't thank you enough for your help. I'm trying to locate all the resources that I can. My son is not only deaf but he also is MR (IQ-65), PDD-NOS( atypical autism ) and has mental illness. It has been a challange in Kansas....there is nothing, even with our SED wavier that they offer....still no services. I struggle with getting him help and being told that there isn't help here for him. I've had specialists throw up their hands and tell me that they have no answers. Also, I'm a nurse, how is the job market for nurses? I will send you my email...let me find out how to. Thank you for your help.

I am forwarding your message to my neighbors and asking them to reply to you if they can. Meanwhile I thought I would do what I could to answer the questions that I can.

Pretty much all of Austin is safe to live in, we have very low violent crime rates here, some of the lowest in the US. However property crimes are a problem, we have some of the highest rates for theft in the US. There are however some neighborhoods that are worse then others.

See this post about what zip codes in town have the highest crime rates. http://www.city-data.com/forum/austi...available.html Refer to the zip code map referenced in that link to see where those are.

It would help if you could define what affordable means to you. Comparing demographic information from http://www.city-data.com/ The cost of living is higher in Austin then where you are coming from, but incomes are higher and poverty level is lower.

Kansas City
Dec. 2009 cost of living index in Kansas City: 86.5
Median gross rent in 2009: $641.
Percentage of residents living in poverty in 2009: 22.8%
Estimated median household income in 2009: $34,652

Austin
Dec. 2009 cost of living index in Austin: 94.7
Median gross rent in 2009: $883.
Percentage of residents living in poverty in 2009: 18.4%
Estimated median household income in 2009: $50,132

It is my impression from reading older discussions on City-Data that the market is pretty good for nurses in Austin. There are numerous hospitals and medical facilities in the area. Searching the Austin City-Data forum for "Nursing" there are several discussions from earlier this year that talk about this. Here are a few

I lived in Austin for two years and loved it....Austin is great for the deaf. If you are deaf yourself, don't worry, they will come find YOU. Start with the Texas School for the Deaf. You might want to consider getting involved in parent groups too. Something else for you to consider...Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX is very good at answering questions about parent resources for those caring for children with multiple disabilities including deafness. You might want to try to contact them even though you're going to Austin.

Let me warn you about placing your kid to TSD. TSD is known a worst education for the middle/high school students. Yes, Austin has a great deaf community, but not that school. We vistied there and there were students talking about sex, drugs, especially gangs, etc. It was horrible. We decided to mainstream our kid in public school.

I am thinking or relocating to Austin because I understand it has a good deaf population. Alto' I have no working knowledge of the city and how to meet other deaf individuals in the community. In addition, trying to figure what part of town is reasonable to live in as well.

Yes, it does have a deaf population. Start with the Texas School for the Deaf and with the Texas Department of Rehab and go on from there. Facebook is a good place to start searching for new deaf friends and groups in Austin.

Are there any mainstream schools in the area or in east Texas that have a large Deaf population? We need to leave our school but I don't want my daughter to be deprived of what she needs culturally.
