I just went through many of the recent food threads but didn't see exactly what I was looking for. My wife and I have found a couple of places we like that are delicious, but not quite as heavy on the sodium and fat content (Velvet Taco and Vera Cruz). We loved the food, but didn't feel bloated or like we had a lead weight in our stomachs the following morning. Are there any other places you think would fit this criteria?

Aw come on, Good Mexican food is full of lots of cheese and that's always going to bloat you up.

My favorite is Flores.

My advice, no queso just salsa. You can order the enchiladas with chicken and a lighter sauce, like the verde sauce instead of the heavier sauces like Tex Mex or mole. You can order black beans instead of refried. Fajitas are always a good protein source if you don't add sour cream and cheese, but that defeats the purpose...

I've certainly opted for fajitas on more than one occasion. The lady at our hotel (who recommended the Velvet Taco last night), has suggested Jack Allen's (which is where we're at right now). Hopefully another good suggestion.

Good call on Jack Allen's ...gets a little spendy for everyday...very popular weekend brunch.

Ok big thumbs up to my hotel lady. This place is to die for....Yum!!!!!!

You are right 10scoachrick. Fortunately, I'm used to higher prices so it seems very reasonable to me.

It doesn't matter much which venue, just stay away from the flour tortillas, queso and sour cream. Order chicken or shrimp fajitas with corn tortillas and avocado. Eat only a handful of chips, but with lots of salsa. Your taste buds might be on fire, but you'll eat much less.... and a margarita to cool it down.

Damn, getting hungry for Maudie's now...

Blue Corn Harvest in Cedar Park or Georgetown is very good.

However, it is real Mexican, not Tex-Mex. Absolutely love it.

Since I'm on a low carb diet, I skip the rice, beans, and tortillas... go easy on the chips, but can't resist a few. Side effect is no bloating at all! I do load up on things like queso, guac, peppers/onions/tomato/lettuce and of course the meats. For Tex-Mex (which is the heavy stuff), I like Maudies (S Lamar and other locations) and Chekos (Koenig Lane).

For some more southwestern-style Mexican with a little less fat/cheese, I like Zuzu's (Mopac near 2222) and Z-Tejas (Arboretum).

Authentic Mexican is a different story, and not what we are talking about based on the original post... so I won't go there.
