Until your vehicle qualifies as vintage/antique, you can expect about $75 per year for tags(no ad valorem tax, per se).

Initially, your buy-in may be a little higher; but the yearly renewal is not tied to the value of the vehicle. You do have to pass an emissions test if you are in one of the metro counties listed:
  • Austin-Round Rock:
    • Travis
    • Williamson
  • Houston-Galveston-Brazoria:
    • Brazoria
    • Fort Bend
    • Galveston
    • Harris
    • Montgomery
  • Dallas-Fort Worth:
    • Collin
    • Dallas
    • Denton
    • Ellis
    • Johnson
    • Kaufman
    • Parker
    • Rockwall
    • Tarrant

Thank you! Coming from CA (don't hate me, I am NOT bringing any of that CR*P with me) Texas is a great bargain!

How much time will you be spending in each, and will you have a TX or LA driver's license?

This is similar to my questions. My wife and I are moving from Arkansas to Texas. Together we have 3 vehicles:
2010 Chevy HHR, 2014 Nissan Cube, and 2016 Chevy Silverado pickup.

How much does TX DL normally cost?

Do I have to get TX DL within 30 days?

How much do TX tags usually cost?

Will there be extra cost just to register vehicles in TX?

Isn't TX supposed to discontinue using two tags per vehicle soon?

I noticed that TX vehicles have two different inspection stickers. What are they for and how much?

This NON-government link will give you the overview. Best to hit the official links for specifics.

I haven't heard anything "positive" about the elimination of the front plate since we arrived in '08. Apparently, it had been discussed but APPARENTLY someone has a brother in the license plate business(as well as the highway sign business). We are stuck with drilling holes into our front bumpers(except I just got a new car and might see how long I can go without doing that. I know folks who NEVER installed a front plate in the 20+ years they lived in Austin ).

Not two inspection stickers...ONE registration sticker...recent change. As I mentioned above, you will need to pass emissions testing as well as vehicle inspection in the counties listed.

Thank you for providing the website. I will definitely check it out.

To be safe, I will get two tags. I dislike the idea of drilling holes in our front bumpers. I'm sure I could go somewhere to have front bumper tag holders installed on our vehicles.

.
The FIAT front plate mount is molded to fit the shape of the bumper...not to shabby. There are various plate holders that attach to certain models without putting holes in the bumper...plenty of creative folks driving Corvettes, Miatas, Alfa Romeos, etc in Texas

As you might expect, your Driver's License is a state item while your vehicle registration is based on county of residence. Make sure your insurance is in place before you go to any of those folks(Typically, insurance, inspection, plates...then DL ...).

I am already insured through Shelter. That would be no problem.

How come TX has one of highest auto uninsurance rates in the country? Maybe that's one of reasons auto insurance is higher in TX.

I wish. I haven't heard anything about it, but I sure do wish they would.

The inspection sticker has been done away with. Now, you take proof of inspection (and proof of insurance) to the tax office in order to get/renew your registration sticker.

Here is a link to the Texas DMV's website that lists specifics, including fee amounts.
