We recently got a job offer in Austin area and could be relocating from north shore suburb in the Chicago land. I wonder how does the public school system compare ? We are two kids in the elementary school age and, which suburbs or school districts in Austin area would be comparable to northshore in Chicago land ?

Unlike Chicago, we have multiple districts in the area. The Austin Independent school district may be the most similar to a Chicago public school district, but move out a bit to an area that is not served by the “Chicago public school” district, you’ll get a different experience.

If you could tell us about the area of the cut you are interested in moving to we cd. Tell you about the district that serves that neighborhood. If you’re in the very beginning stage of your research that could be hard, but I apologize that there’s not a general answer.

Austin ISD is the largest (82,000) district in the area and usan “urban” district.

Here is a map to help guide you. Austin Area School Districts Map | See ISD Locations | We Love Austin

Let us know which district you’d like feedback on and we can help a bit more. I will offer up that doing a google search for reviews can be helpful, but do not rely on Grest Schools ratings completely. Using it as a piece of your research is good, but education is individual and what works for one family may be different for another.

I grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago and lived in Austin for 10 years. What schools are you looking for comparisons with? New Trier, Evanston, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Stevenson?

Thanks! I live in Northbrook. Some research indicates Eanes may be something similar to New Trier, how would they compare? What would be equivalent of Stevenson ?

Yep, New Trier and Westlake/Eanes are very similar. Lake Travis and Vandegrift (part of Leander ISD) are probably most similar to Stevenson. Hope that helps.
