I have a close friend that did the opposite. But, she went to college in Ann Arbor. And was a single millennial. I’m ve contemplated Madison as a possible smaller version of Austin. Maybe you’d get a similar vibe? But might want to ask in the Michigan forum, too.

That is just really hard to know without knowing your wants/needs much better, probably better than you can get from a forum.

I would guess your rent will be quite a bit cheaper in Ann Arbor and if you'll be making the same amount of pay in Ann Arbor that you made in Austin, that would be a good benefit. Austin is getting outrageous expensive. Even fast food has become expensive in Austin.

You won't save much money if you live in Ann Arbor proper (unless you airbnb out your place for gamedays), but will save a ton if you live in the burbs.

There are some other towns in Michigan (like Ypsilanti and Royal Oak) that have cool downtowns and are affordable. You may want to look into those. I'd also try Madison, Colombus, or Bloomington. The college towns are nice, because they'll have art museums, more live music/ comedy/ shows and better restaurants.

Ann Arbor is a beautiful place to live. They actually have proper seasons haha (Imagine Fall right now <3)

I know since its a college town though, the cost of living, especially rent, can be pretty high. However, Michigan as a whole is pretty reasonable/affordable. Gas, food/going out to eat, all of those things are cheaper than Austin.

As Blazer said, Ypsilanti is a town maybe 20 minutes or so only from Ann Arbor and is a lot cheaper to live. I do think the lower cost of living comes with a lower quality of living. The vibe of "Yspi" is not as "nice" as Ann Arbor.

I kind of agree that Michigan as a whole may be cheaper than Austin, but gas prices are cheaper in Texas.

Food in Austin is pretty reasonable IMHO. Atlanta was more expensive. Seattle was definitely more expensive.

I haven't lived in Texas in a number of years. But I currently live in the desert where gas is $4.79 per gallon, rent is $1600 for a studio, and fast food is over $10 a meal. MI would be a dream to me (outside of your loony governor).

Austin is around $3 whereas Ann Arbor is $3.50ish (as per gas buddy).
