We bought a cute puppy last fall but with 3 small boys we have realized we bit off more than we can chew, lesson learned. Yes, it's not going to be easy to let him go but sadly this will be best for the dog and us.

Where can I post an ad to sell him? I see craigslist has adoption listings with a small adoption fee but I'd like to get at least $300 (considering what we paid for him, vet visits and the fact that we'll include all the accessories).

Any recommendations for where I should post the ad or should I just put him on craigslist and be done?

Thanks!

You might have a problem since the dog is older now and most will want a puppy. I would expect to lose money if it is a pure bred with papers, Otherwise look for a good home and take the loss. 300 is nothing when you are talking about dogs and their cost overall.

i can't remember what the site is... but i know there are actually several sites for selling pets. i'd do a search for pet sales in your local area, i know my husband has been searching the ads for pets as he can't wait to get a dog once we settle into our house (I promised him he could have a dog once he gave me a kid and our oldest child will be 12 this year yet he has no dog; he loves to tell that story).

What sort of dog is it? $300 is high, even for a brand new puppy, unless it's an English Bulldog... and if it is, I know someone who will give you $300 for it

$300 on CL will get you flagged off quickly - but someone may see it before that happens and be interested. You may get away with $200, $150 would be no problem.

If you want to try other avenues, perhaps the Statesman or Little Nickle will work... but again, I still think $300 is high. Also this site Kijiji Austin Classifieds: Free Classified Ads for Austin, Texas

thanks for the replies, I have no idea how this works and we weren't expecting to have another family adopt him. I may just try CL and post it with all of the accessories.

I looked at kijiji but didn't see any pets on there.

Money is not the issue here; it is finding the dog a good home where he will be loved until the day he dies. If one puts money as a priority over a dog, I would certainly have to take a good, hard look at one's character.

May your little guy be blessed and have a wonderful life ahead of him. Please do all you can to be sure that he will be treated nicely and as part of a family.

Totally agree, our main concern is finding the right home for him. We feel terrible we aren't the best place for him but it will be better to rehome him now than later.

you might ask at your vet
there are rescue leagues for almost every breed that will take a dog but not pay for one--but they usually make sure the homes dogs go to are vetted -- remember the uproar when Ellen D was having her dog repossed because she gave it to a friend instead of giving it back to the rescue league when hers got too much for her...

Also, don't know if you got your dog through a breeder, but usually breeders stipulate that if you're going to get rid of your dog, you have to give it back to them so that THEY can find a good home for him/her.
