We are originally from California and retired to Mexico where we lived for ten happy years. Health reasons caused us to return to the United States and we did the same research that young folks do in choosing a place to live. Austin fit our needs and interests and, based on the past two years living here, it is a great place to enjoy retirement.

I think that, if any trend can be guaranteed in Austin's future, it is that it will get older, and more female, and there will be far more things for 30+ folks do to...just the aging in place of the 20 somethings will make that happen, as I don't expect the majority to suddenly leave the city when they turn 30 and/or have familes.......we are prob witnessing the very end of that era where everything was 20-something/college based per entertainment and such.......if we haven't already started that exodus.

Based on your user name, I'm assuming that your ten years in Mexico was in San Miguel de Allende. If I'm correct, I'm envious. I've only visited a few times but it is my ultimate destination. I don't have to explain to you what there is to love about it. However, first I have to get my daughter through school so I'm considering Austin for a variety of reasons. I'm hoping to get her into the McCallum Fine Arts Academy and to get myself a teaching job. We'll be exploring Austin at the end of July, testing ourselves to see if the heat kills us!
I'm glad to hear that you've been happy in Austin. Do you ever get back to SMA?

You may have noticed that Austin traffic is light these days. That is because 20% (or so it seems) of the population spends summer vacation in San Miguel to escape the heat here. I still maintain my friendships but can't get back to SMA often because we now take care of a granddaughter who will also attend McCallum eventually since it is our assigned district. Recently, Newsweek magazine ran an article which listed the top 1300 public high schools in the nation. McCallum came out at 646.

Austin has a high spanish speaking population. I get plenty of opportunity to use both languages. SMA real estate prices are higher than those here in Austin. It is not as cheap to live there as many other places in Mexico but it has a lot to offer. Unfortunately, access to high quality medical care is not one of them. I wish you well in your plans.
