Yes, I think the Congress for the New Urbanism's Charter is a pretty definitive statement of what new urbanism is. Some developers have at times hijacked the term for marketing purposes and some have done projects that are true to the authentic meaning of the term.

Well, there are a lot of "New Urbanist" developments that don't meet the strict definition.

Exactly. That's even worse and more prevalent. The same applied to "organic" until the government put a legal definition on that term.

Any good idea is going to have someone co-opt it as a marketing term and water down the meaning in the process. It's just something to watch for (I have a checklist for "Green built" homes - it's a lot longer than the things they advertise that make them "green".)
