I've never been to that place, but as a Texan, I'd say it would be a travesty to call yourself a bbq joint and not use wood

Still though, I pick it up sometimes on the way home so it's not all bad.

I actually like Pokejos - their sides are good, esp the mac and cheese, and their BBQ is decent.

County Line is more for the dining experience than the brisket but their beef ribs rock! Actually, my favorite thing to get at CL on-the-hill is the grilled chicken breast, go figure!

The only thing that is good at rudys is their extra moist brisket. You have to watch the pieces they give you, after going there a lot you can tell if they give you a dry extra moist piece. Some days the extra moist is just dry and there isnt anything you can do - but that is pretty rare.

Everything else is dry, chicken, turkey, pork tenderloin, prime rib. It seems though that people like those meats at rudy's so they must not mind the dryness. Rudy's ribs are tender and both the beef and the baby back are good.

We ate at kreuz's (lockhart) for the first time a week ago and had some brisket that was good and some that was dry. Rudy's was still better.

Probably the same people that like lean well-done steak.

I would check out Rudys too. their the only one I know that has 3 different types of brisket, We usally get the mid one. Ask for samples, before you buy......
Also, come out to Dripping Spring to try the orginal Salt Lick... it's a really cool experience, but bring your own drinks, their water sucks, and they use the same water for their sodas drinks

There are actually only two levels, dry vs. delicious. Cutters choice means they give you dry or delcious depending on their choice.

Also, Ill put up rudy's extra moist (the 80% good days) against any other brisket.

Salt lick unfortunately has very dry brisket and their sides are awful. Their ribs are ok, but it is pretty hard to mess up ribs. I love their sauce pretty much more than any other food. I used to eat it directly poured over rice. Everytime I go to the airport I get what I think is the best meal in austin at the salt lick. A stuffed baked potato with chopped brisket (cant tell it's dry when it is smothered in sauce). It is giant and only around 6.75. Hardly anyone knows about it (the employees said pretty much only airport employees order it).

I like Green Mesquite, Salt Lick, and Rudy's - all for different reasons. Wasn't sold on Elgin's bbq.

My favorites are Kreutz (sp?) in Lockhart, Manns in Austin and Southside Meat Market in Elgin - the best sausage in the world!!! Their fixins are some of the best also!! Rudy's, in my opinion, is ok but is mostly there to draw in the people who don't really know what Texas bbq is!

When you are comparing are you comparing kreutz's fatty brisket vs. rudys extra moist brisket?

I have only been to kreutz's once and rudy's dozens, but kreutz's had one set of fatty brisket that was good and one that dry.

I thought the pieces that were good were fine, but not better than rudy's.
