I live in a little town outside San Antonio and the wife and I travel to Austin a lot for just daytripper things such as Barton Springs and shopping. We found a great pizza place recommended by one of the locals (Home Slice) and I got to wondering what are some other great food places in Austin?

BBQ- Love Bowie St. found in the back of Whole Paycheck, er, I mean Whole Foods on 6th and Lamar. Ive had Salt Lick and was not impressed.

Hamburgers- Huts is ok, but looking for better....

Pizza- Home Slice is probably the best Ive ever had. Just exceptional. But whats YOUR suggestion?

Any other great food suggestions???????

I DESPERATELY miss the Enchiladas Verdes at Chuy's. When I left Texas I knew the withdrawal would be hell. I was right!

If you are ever up in the Cedar Park area,Moonies off of old 183,is a great place for burgers. Being from SA I have not really found any to die for Tex Mex places here. Do yal come up 281 or 35 from the SA area cause up 281 has some great food places....

Get your burger fix at Moonie's up in Cedar Park...So. Bell Blvd(183)...the buns are worth the trip! Really good onion rings as well!

Mighty Fine Burgers is now the best burger in Austin IMO. Like by a long shot. There are 3 locations, I think. Casino El Camino and Texadelphia are also great for burgers.

For BBQ, might want to try Iron Works right by the Convention Center. Or Lambert's, but it's a little expensive/fancy.

Hoovers off Manor Rd. east of 35 has amazing soul food/home cooking. I've had almost everything on the menu and it's all delicious. Their chicken fried chicken is heavenly.

REALLY wanted to like Hoover's on 183...tried it a few times over the past year and it really is more of a production than I care for. Loud, crowded, out of this and that. Will say the fried chicken was tasty but a way too greasy as evidenced by the condition of the paper 'plate' it is served on. The place could use a good cleaning, especially the dining room carpet...and why in the world wouldn't a home-cookin' place have sweet tea? And a new recipe for rolls and cornbread wouldn't hurt--DW and I both like bread and last time we didn't finish a single piece. Way dry and flavorless. A couple of their 'mates' (sides) were tasty--green beans for one but not enough to make up for the general disappointment we feel each time we 'give it another try'.

Jim's, right down the road, is basically a cheaper version of the same thing as Hoover's...basic cooking(minus the fried chicken, unfortunately) served in a 'retro' atmosphere. Very tasty pot roast, meatloaf, couple of sides AND sweet tea! The place doesn't look like much and I've heard that some locations are more like truck stops but we would dearly like to pick up this Jim's location and move it up to N/W Parmer Ln.

I agree with the Moonie's recommendations for burgers and I'm glad that more people are going there. It really is worth driving up to Cedar Park if you're searching for the best burger. Their regular fries are great, but I've heard raves for their chili cheese fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings as well. The bun is sweet bread.

Are you serious? I have to strongly disagree here. I think Mighty Fine is Mighty Crappy and may qualify as one of the worst burgers in Austin.
