So I normally don't have to go through any tolls from work to home so I am not planning to purchase a tx tag. Well today last minute I had to make a quick trip to Pflugerville. In a hurry because I had to make it somewhere by 3 I decided to go through the pay bay mail toll option on the first two tolls. Well, on the 3rd one when I got off in Pflugerville there was no option to pay by mail it was exact change or tx tag only. I had no change and thinking that the tx tag one might be a pay by mail option I went through that one.

I know that you get charged a small fee for doing the pay by mail option when your doing 70 down the highway. But what happens if you go through the tx tag only lane and you don't have one? I am curious if I am going to get the same small fee added to that one, or am I going to end up with a huge fine.

No, they'll just charge you a fee.

You should just get an invoice in the mail. The "small fee" is $1.00 for invoicing plus the toll. But why not just get a toll tag? The tag itself is free - you pay $20 initially and the tolls come out of that. They are also discounted so you don't pay as much as the cash lanes or pay by mail. We have tags on both cars (the same $20 covers both) and although we seldom use them, it's nice to have for those occasions.

Default MSB Toll Bill

So, to avoid the trouble of slowing down and looking for coins and paying the small bill (plus processing charge of $1.00) I eventually got a txtag.
However I still received a toll bill for using the 183A toll road from a corporation called MSB with a Central Texas Mobility Authority stamp on the bill. This toll rd is seems is not affiliated with txtag.

I don't understand. My first instinct was the bill was phony. But it does seem legit. But with such a small number of toll roads in this area, I don't know why they can all team up and have one system of making payments.

All the toll roads in and around Austin accept TxTag, even 183A. Are you sure it isn't from before you got the TxTag? The bill theoretically means that you drove through and the TxTag did not get scanned, and a photo was taken of your license plate.

I guess you are right. The 183A lanes say "pay by mail" or TxTag.
Either my TxTag didn't get scanned or something else went wrong.
