Can anyone comment on the traffic on the 35 from as far south as San Marcos heading north to Austin? I mean, how bad is BAD traffic? Just trying to get some perspective. Is it lighter in some areas then heavier in others? Is it parking lot crowded? Moving but slow?

Thanks

I used to do that drive until '06. It wasn't bad going downtown...45-60 minutes. You don't hit the back up until Slaughter unless there's an accident. There will be accidents 2-3 days per week. During the summer when school's out, it's a lot faster. Going home it opens up south of the river around 290 and you can drive 70MPH from that point on. I did work 7:30am-4:00 so I got to work and left early.

I lived SW of San Marcos out in the country for a year and tried the commute on I-35 a couple times during morning rush, and it was heinous. DO NOT DO IT. The comments by auchtungpv are spot on. Commuting into Austin on Mopac or I-35 from north or south, doesn't matter, it's all pretty horrible, but San Marcos is a ridiculous commute. Just get a lower paying job in the San Marcos area and save 2 hours of driving plus a few hundred bucks in gas per month.

The word "the" in front of a freeway comes from Californian's. The West Coast accent is identified by the use of the word "the" in front of freeways or public transportation...etc. Californian's would say the 35, the Bart, the 405 and so on.

Sort of like "on line" rather than "in line" marks one as "not from around here". (I've always found myself looking for the line on the ground that the speaker clearly thinks we're standing on.)
