I just found this excellent Central Texas Native Plant database with photos on the Wildflower Center website.

NPIN: Recommended Native Plants - Texas-Central

Their Spring Plant Sale is coming up soon 2010: April 10 and 11, 2010

Even sooner the Zilker Botanical Garden festival and plant sale will be on Saturday & Sunday, March 27-28, 2010.

What are your favorite native Texas plants?

Turks Cap is one of my favorites.

The city has a great full-color guide of native and adapted landscape plants. It includes info that is important for Austin gardeners, like whether the plants prefer the rocky soil on the west side, whether they are deer resistant, etc.

This is their web site, they have a PDF version of the guide in sections:
City of Austin -

However, I think you can find a hard copy at nurseries and the wildflower center. It's a really valuable tool.

My favorite plants are yuccas, lantana (because it is just so incredibly easy to maintain even in drought, and you can get a variety of colors), and plumbago. When I'm looking for inspiration, I take a look at the various planters on the Ladybird lake trail. They do quite a variety, and many have a purpose (shade or erosion control, for instance).
