So my family is relocating back to Austin from Dallas. I will be working in Round Rock and my spouse will be working in downtown Austin. Although neither of us minds a longer commute, we want to try and keep our morning and evening commutes somewhat reasonable. What neighborhoods should we consider purchasing a house? Our budget is around $500K and we need good schools. For some reason my wife is anti Austin public schools so living in the Austin school district may be a tougher sell. Don't mind living in the suburbs but also don't mind living in the city.

Great hills. It is about 15 minutes to round rock (dell) and about 15 minutes downtown with no rush hour. About 25 minutes with rush hour. Dominion at great hills and other select areas feed into RRISD - laurel mountain/cathy caraway etc, canyon vista, westwood.

The north part (davenport ranch) of eanes may not be too bad either. The drive to downtown will be similar because getting to mopac will be hard. But the drive to round rock will be longer because 360 has a lot of lights.

Where will you be working in Round Rock? I live in Southeast Round Rock in the Forest Creek/Lake Forest/Sonoma area. My husband used to commute to Southwest Austin everyday and it would take about 35 to 40 minutes to get to downtown on his way Southwest. I agree the Northwest Austin area that feeds into the Round Rock ISD might be a good fit. The schools in that area are considered some of the best in the district. Homes in this area will be in parts of the 78759, 78750, and 78726 zip codes. Keep in mind though that parts of 78750 and 78759 also feed into AISD. And parts of 78726 feed into LISD.

The lowest price home currently available in Davenport Ranch is $595K. The only neighborhood in Eanes ISD that has homes under $500K and that might make sense for a commute to Round Rock is Deer Creek.

I'd suggest NW Hills, 78731. Yes, AISD schools but the Doss-Murchinson-Anderson track is hard to beat. You are 20 minutes from downtown, maybe less and maybe 30 minutes (?) to Round Rock. Otherwise the schools that feed into Westwood HS in RRISD, some of which is in 78759.

It depends on what kind of house you want and what kind of life. There are beautiful areas in Austin (like Crestview) that have access to entertainment, walking distance to parks, nice restaurants, etc. Also, if you like having public transport, most of the 'burbs don't have that. Round Rock does not. If you don't mind driving everywhere, Round Rock or Pflugerville have nice areas.
Do you want a brand new house or something older with big trees and a yard?

I agree with Great Hillls, my husband works in Round Rock and I work in downtown and the commute is 20 min for me and 20-25 min for my husband. We like the location it is close to everything , part of Great Hills feeds to Austin ISD (Hill-Murchison-Anderson) and the other part feeds Round Rock ISD ( Laurel-Canyon-Westwood)

Falcon Pointe is also right next to Blackhawk. Both are very good neighborhoods in Pflugerville. From these neighborhoods you could approach downtown from the East using toll 130 although that starts to get expensive if you are using the toll everyday. The other options would be I35 or you can parallel I35 on 685 for more than half the drive. I think the commute to downtown from the Great Hills area would be easier.
