Hello all, I'm a student from the USA strongly considering NZ for a move. Auckland and Wellington both seem great for different reasons. For my purposes the student scene is important, even though I'll be a 30-year old PhD student I'm still a night owl and go out. So which city is friendlier/has better accommodations for students? 24hr restaurants and coffee shops are definitely a plus.

Actually I am not even sure which Unis in NZ offer Gender Studies for a PhD, besides U of Auckland. Any others?

I don't think Victoria University has Gender and Women's Studies.

I would go to Auckland though, it's bigger, more exciting, plenty of night life and student activities.

Of course I'm from Auckland so I'm biased but it really does have more to offer.

Oh you were the perfect person to reply to this Feminist solidarity! So I guess Welly is off the list but any other schools besides Auckland offer the PhD? So far I love Auckland and found the whole JAFA thing amusing.

I believe Canterbury University has post grad courses. But as much as I like Christchurch it just isn't as vibrant as Auckland, especially with all the earthquake damage.

Woot, they have a Gender Studies PhD also. Auckland gets strong priority though; I'm sure the schools are nearly equivalent in academic merit.

Yes they are. NZ doesn't have the same prestige value on schools that the US does.

As awesome as Auckland seems, I thought for a moment Wellington would have been a better fit since I prefer "small but mighty" cities. Examples would be my hometown of Tampa, Portland in the Pacific NW USA, or Stockholm. Not small I guess but mid-sizedish and not gigantic megapolises. However I'm tethered to areas that house a University with a PhD program in Women or Gender Studies. So far NZ appears to have only two schools that offer the program; Auckland and Canterbury Universities. Also Auckland is still reasonably-sized so I should be ok there, it seems like an awesome city.
