Here's one American who is pretty enthusiastic about Australia. He goes a bit overboard (no graffiti, really?) but it's entertaining for an American to read:

James Moore: Finding America's Past In Australia's Present

Very nice, a bit idealistic in spots but it's a different perspective when you're a tourist. You don't often see the gnarly bits when on holiday. Nevertheless, the article was better PR for Australian tourism than some of the silly ads the Australian tourism people have come up with lately.

No graffiti? Maybe he didn't see much of Perth. I've seen less graffiti in the writer's country than my own.

He was probably referring to the rural places, which I too think do a good job at keeping themselves neat and tidy.

a nice fluffy piece, a reminder to me that there is a lot of this country I need to see still!

The lack of graffiti - must have missed seeing any of the captials, nor caught a train ....

Yes Australia does have a feeling of the 1950's or earlier with many of it's underdeveloped rural areas and towns. And that is one thing that is nice with visiting.

Yeah it is a bit fluffy and idealistic, which is easy to do with any place you visit as a tourist.

Yes going to the US did make me appreciate things about my country. The wide open spaces (yes, even the American West feels crowded compared to the Outback), down to earth nature of our citizen's, how we aren't overrun by fast-food and hotel chains, an abundance of beautiful places to escape to (not that the US doesn't have them, but we just have fewer crowds).

Do they really have 'tresspassers will be shot' signs in the US?

Of course he didn't mention our real estate/cost of living (maybe he did, I skimmed through the article). Americans can get all twinkly eyed from meeting some nice locals while vacationing. Try living here and it's a different story.

As for general comfort/quality of life better than the US. As for excitement, the US has some things we don't. But we are really lucky.
