Hi folks!
I'm from Vietnam, and I'm going to let my son go to Adelaide for a study abroad high school programme, but I've been reading some articles about Adelaide that scared me about crime, sexual abuses, and this kind of stuff, what scaredme most was when I read this article Adelaide, "City of Corpses" ? — Adelaide — Australia's City of Corpses — Crime Library on truTV.com it really scared me when I read that Adelaide is known as city of corpses!
I know that Australia is a safe country and is a good place to live, and it's even safer than here in Hanoi, Vietnam. But i want to be sure that my son will live in a safe and good city, in a good host-family, etc.
So, is Adelaide a safe city? Will my son be safe? Tell me more abut the safe in Adelaide?
Thank you

Your English is great, much better than many Vietnamese Australians.

Adelaide is reputed to be the mass-murder capital of Australia. Maybe it's the boredom. As for day to day crime, I have no idea - although I hear short-changing people down at the feed store was big for a while.

Mass murder? Lol. The only instance of mass murder anywhere in Oz that actually comes to mind was Port Arthur. Going by the actual definition of mass murder as opposed to serial killings.

Geez, Trimac, she's sending her child off to live with strangers in a foreign country, wouldn't you be nervous?

OP, Adelaide is really really safe, it's like a big country town. The biggest risk would be if your son was a girl and walked around parks at night (as in any place in the world, unfortunately). He could also get in a fight with drunk people in a pub, but that should be pretty easy to avoid. With very very restrictive gun laws and police intent on catching drunk drivers and speeders it's one of the safest places in the world.

There was "the family" murders in the 70s/80s and young men were the targets.. that was a long time ago.

last one listed is 1999.. that was 13 years ago.

Don't fall for that stuff... Adelaide is perfectly safe. I'm sure there is more happening in Hanoi or HCMC that can hurt him than in Adelaide.

But come on, ANYTHING can happen. If I were a parent, I would have sent my kid(s) to a college-oriented city/town in the US or Canada.

I don't think you will find a city or town in the world that hasn't had a past murder. Does that make everywhere you go unsafe? No.

Everyone is making out like Adelaide is the next Juarez or something, it is a very safe city to live in. I would say with Near certainty that your son will be very relaxed and safe there and find the people very friendly.

Like anywhere, there are people that will rape girls, or pick a fight with someone or every few years in a while there will be an attack like the murders listed in previous comments but but you can't rule your life by what might happen if one crazy person lives in a city of millions - it could happen anywhere. I am a young woman and I would feel safe walking around Adelaide at night even - very safe and people look out for one another.

Did I say something wrong? I sent him/her a DM (well replied to the one the OP sent) giving the lowdown. I know ADL a bit. I've also been to Vietnam and the US, and apart from the perception, Oz feels the safest by far. No joke, the traffic in Vietnam felt far scarier than anything in Australia, although being robbed in America was pretty bad.
