Yes they do things a trifle differently in NZ, after a humourous speech by a Minister of the Crown (note, a center right Minister of the crown) the bill was passed by a wide margin.

It ended with the public area in song.

It makes one wonder what Australia is afraid of, or are we ruled by religion here ?

That speech was just brilliant. It was also scarily accurate, and facts are not something the conservatives usually possess in their arsenal against issues like gay marriage.
I think you may be right re the religion aspect. It is such a shame that some humans lives are subject to the views of those that choose to worship gods, fairies and unicorns etc..

Just gotta keep chipping away...

It's got nothing to do with religion. It's just that our Politicians are a bunch of morons, who don't really listen to public opinion.

I disagree. If it wasn't based upon religion, there wouldn't be the objections that there are. Free minded people are not against the premise because they are just that.

There should be a Referendum for this if they want to pass it in Australia.
Most Internet Polls seem to be split down the middle, but these are not necessarily the views of mainstream Australia - especially the older generation who may not actually use the internet!
Australia is a largey irreligious place compared with the US and other western countries, so this would not be a factor either.
Unlike the Referendum for a Republic - there will not be the level of indifference or apathy that we saw there, most people have an opinion on this one.

Why do we need a referendum? Every scientific poll that has been done shows support being at least 60%. Even Liberal voters are pretty much 50/50 on the issue and Barry O'Farrell has said he supports it. Waste of money and time, IMO, to hold a referendum when there is no constitutional requirement to and in which the answer to the question is already known.

Good on NZ, I will never understand what's holding back the Oz Government.

Queenslanders? I jest -- don't Schmo me people.

I have no doubt that some day Australia will follow EnZed's englightened lead.
