If the Australian people could vote for a pop song composed in the last 50 years to be our new National Anthem (God forbid! but this is a hypothetical ) what would you vote for?
I'd probably pick 'I still Call Australia Home' by Peter Allen, maybe followed by 'Great Southern Land.' I sure hope it wouldn't be 'Land Downunder' .
Oh and Tri? I love I still call Australia Home AND I even get a tear whenever I see this version, especially love the opening BUT Qantas pretty much owns it now and I don't want to be giving them free advertising either.
If you wanna go the way of a pop song as an anthem I've always loved Gangajang's This is Australia BUT somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind I seem to recall that was sucked up into the advertising campaign at some point too. AND it might be a relevant choice for Queenslanders but it's not very inclusive of the rest of us.
Anyone who served in the ADF knows that Khe Sanh is the anthem (like it or not).
On the subject of Cold Chisel/ Jimmy Barnes, the song "Working Class Man" would similarly be an anthem, even if it mainly champions the working class culture in Australia.
Midnight Oils "Beds are Burning", and "Solid Rock" by Goanna would be anthems for the aboriginal cause, and very good songs.
However, most of these songs, just like Men at Work's "Down Under", are old and tired, and passe in today's world.
How many people would still listen to the "Business as Usual" album from Men at Work.
Likewise, I saw Jimmy Barnes live in the early 90's and enjoyed it at the time, but usually change the radio station when I here him on the radio now.
Bottom line is that most pop songs do not stand the test of time, so leave them in the history books, and not turn them into our anthem.
