hey there, ok so i have questions about the weather in Melbourne, VIC.

first of all, is it generally cool? Like is it jacket weather all the time?

and secondly is it cloudy? I cant handle a city that is cloudy all the time. Is Melbourne going to be like a Seattle or something where you can really only get 30 days of sun a year?

It is pretty much Seattle in winter, except days are about 13-18C and nights 5-8C for the most part. In the outer suburbs, temps might drop to -1 or -2C a few times a year. If you are next to the bay though (e.g. Frankston) , overnight lows only occasionally drop below 5C, and 7-10C is typical.

It is cloudy in winter, that is for freaking sure. Lots of light rain and drizzle, often the ground is wet and soft. It will feel like a warmer version of Seattle or Vancouver. Summer and Autumn are much sunnier.

Melbourne gets 2190 hours of sunshine per year. Seattle gets 2170. So by that metric they would appear similar.

Seattle averages 226 cloudy days per year
Melbourne gets 180.
Oakland is around 80.

Seattle averages ~38 inches of rain per year
and Melbourne is ~26 inches.
Compare that to Oakland, CA ~24 inches.

Melbourne's average daily high is 68F with a low of 50F.
Oakland at 67F/51F.
Seattle comes in at 60F/46F.

Melbourne weather to me is a lot more like the foggier/cloudier parts of the Bay Area than anything like Seattle. It just doesn't have the constant drizzle/cloudiness/cold of Seattle. Even though Melbourne has lots of cloudy days it gets broken up by plenty of days that are sunny and in the low 60s.

And Melbourne can get very hot in the summer, way hotter than Seattle in summer on average.

From when I was in Melbourne, I remember it was quite hot in the summer and jacket weather in the winter. In both seasons it can rain suddenly during the day after it being nice and sunny.
