Matariki (Maori New Year) is officially celebrated for the first time on 24th June 2022. Victoria, University of Wellington gave a lecture on the topic in 2017 and the seventh season of MasterChef NZ contains a Matariki-themed ninth episode.

Thanks for the news! So, what do Maori NY traditions consist of?

Never mind. I found the answer.
Quote:
Matariki is the Māori name for a cluster of stars known elsewhere as the Pleiades. The constellation is visible from New Zealand for eleven months of the year, but disappears from the skies for a month in winter, reappearing in mid June, around the time of the winter solstice. Its rising is recognised by many iwi [tribes] as the beginning of a new year. The holiday centres on three principles: remembrance of those who have died, celebrating the present with family and friends; and looking to the future promise of a new year. It is believed to be one of the first Indigenous celebrations to be recognised as a public holiday in a settler colonial state.

Matariki is long overdue for recognition and worthy of a public holiday.

It's other "new " things Maori that concern me - like the "new" greater voting rights based on ethnicity

.... in the stars I see violence ahead from this ideological driven Maori Renaissance.

Agreed on both counts.

I have often wondered myself if Maori are taking over everything albeit only from a point of speculation. In other news, bakeries have been selling cream paua pies - a Maori take on a kiwi classic.

I see more of an ideological push to create a narrative that isn't reflective of NZ society.

I like mussel pies, but paua is a step too far imo.

...and the second official Māori year begins. Shortland Street remembered to include Matariki in their storyline and Air New Zealand created a Matariki-themed commercial. The Māori word for star is whetu.

Do they taste that odd or is it the idea of eating snails?

My one and only snail eating experience was really just about garlic - don't think I could actuallydiscern the snail taste.

Paua (abalone) just seems like a really bad fit with pastry and mornay sauce (mussel pies) - call me narrow minded, but I don't ever want to try a paua pie.
