IMO, prices on new vehicles are approaching obscene levels. It's getting difficult to find even mid-sized, "average" cars for much less than $30k. Pickups are worse, even half-tons are $ 40k on up. Many diesels are well over freekin' $60k. I make a reasonable income, but I don't foresee ever buying another new vehicle. $500 or more a month for simple transportation isn't something I'm willing to waste the money on any more. It seems like more and more people are saying the same thing. I have to wonder, between the greed of manufacturers and government mandating more and more crap on new cars, are they being priced out of reach of many people? Is the industry ever going to get a wake up call?
I have thought so for some time,I drive a 99 Tacoma SR5,now have 195,000 on it,still in perfect condition,cost new almost $17,000 fully equipped with alloy wheels,before this a 1986 Toy extra-cab paid $800, year old,drove it 286,000,sold for $2500.I think I have gotten my money's worth.
Vechicles are a waste of money at today's prices.

On the contrary, our most recent (2014 Escape SE 4WD) was stickered at $28k but we got it for under $23k. That's about what we paid for the 2007 Ranger, and before that a 2002 Jeep Liberty was a bit more at $24k. If you want an F150 it's the best selling vehicle and less likely to be discounted, but our local dealer has a well-equipped super cab for $22,880. It gets 17/23 mpg, while the equivalent 2010 when new was $35,000 and only got 14/18. Add every option and you can get up to $50k and up, but you could do that in 2010 too.

Not as long as American egos keep buying and leasing them.....buy used, save a ton. Let the OTHER guy take the depreciation. It's just a car.
They are getting close. I have never seen so many paper plates (new owner) on pre-owned vehicles as I have in the last couple of years. It used to be a rarity, now it's commonplace. Probably why Chrysler sales are up, they are number one in sub prime car loans.
The automakers have been in business a long time they know what to charge for their products. I bet this same question came up 50 yrs ago to. It will keep coming up every couple of years or so. And guess what the automakers are still around.
No. Manufacturers are not pricing themselves out of business.
