I live in Washington state and have been looking around the car lots at new cars. Many dealers(but not all) have a sticker right next to the MSRP sticker called the "adjusted market value". In my area they are adding $1995.00 above the MSRP.
Do you have this in your area? Is this just a negotiating ploy?

I haven't seen this practice in our area, the Rocky Mountain region.

At $1,995 above the MSRP in your area, that's more than enough money to justify comparison shopping out of the area and a possible trip to pick up a car ... even if it's out of state and a plane trip away.

have you emailed the internet sales manager at any dealerships for specific quotes to see how they compare with pricing guidelines found at Truecar or Edmund's TMV? I generally disregard all the pricing info i see plastered on the windows since I'm more interested in negotiating bottom up from the dealer's approximate cost (including any holdbacks and marketing incentives).

Go to Canada...... The dealer has to still do the warrenty work. Or tell the dealer you will go to Canada if they don't wipe the fee off the deal.

years ago I sold at a dealer that had the 1st year Miatas and the 1st year Mitsu 3000gt vr4's. Those adjustments were common on cars that were difficult to get, and there were those who'd pay it if they wanted the car ( not condoning it at all ).
I myself see it similar to the dealers who add on their own protection plans ( you know, the "paint sealant/pinstripe/etc" packages ) that just allow for more room to bargain and show you more for your trade.
Best thing to do is your homework, know what your car's trade value is ( remembering you will never trade yours at retail for theirs at cost ) and what invoice is on the new car ...... and go in and make the best deal you can.

I haven't seen those big markups around here but I have seen near every dealer have a processing fee of 2-300 bucks

Yes, I am in Clark county just north of Portland and have found the asking price for the model I am interested in is about $2000 higher than the asking price in Texas (was just there on vacation). The inventory here is tighter (less selection) and the prices higher so I will travel to buy.

Does this dealer really think sales are good enough, cars hard enough to find that he can start increasing his markups? Go to another dealer. This one's greedy.

Thanks for the responses. I noticed it especially on the more popular new cars like the Ford Fusion. I definitely will not pay this.

I am not too far from you. I was looking at cars in Olympia and they have this markup price sticker slapped on the new cars there. I will drive farther maybe to Seattle if I have to.
