I have an '02 Accord with 10,700 miles. Like pretty much every other black Accord I see around that model year, the paint has disintegrated. The transmission has had issues with slipping going in and out of 2nd for a few years now. I haven't bothered keeping it up appearance wise for a while since the paint issues started and the interior is a bit messy but nothing a detail shop couldn't straighten out.
I'm looking at getting an '11 Fiesta.
Question is, since the car has obvious issues, should I bother putting much effort into cleaning it up? Also, for that model with generic mechanical and paint issues, edmunds is telling me to expect about $4400. Does that seem reasonable with the aforementioned issues?
Any older vehicle, especially with transmission and cosmetic issues, is not favorably looked on for value. You're not likely to get more for it than what they expect to wholesale it off for.
My guess - $2k for a trade-in, perhaps a bit more if they pad the sale price (ie. inflate the selling price by $1k, yet give you back another $1k on the trade-in so it looks like a better deal to those who don't know better). You can yield more if you sell private party, with all the pros and cons thereof.

I'm not divulging that I have a trade until I settle on a price for the Fiesta.
No need to divulge, they will discover the flaws when they test drive it.
It's not that part - it's the part that you DON'T say you have a trade in until you negotiate the price of the new car first. Otherwise, the salesperson will start playing games and mixing the two numbers together in attempts to confuse the buyer.

It is much simpler to just buy the new car and not bother with the trade in at the time, otherwise they really play a lot of number games with you. The biggest downside is when you walk in, they ask you if you have a trade, the minute you say yes, they say well give us the keys to check it out while you test drive the new cars. This way it is really difficult to get your keys/car back.
Around here Accords fetch pretty good $$ even if they are falling apart. Word on the street is that these cars never breakdown and never need any repairs. Be as it is, just put an ad on craigslist with pics and full disclosure, I am sure you would get decent money for it, much better than the dealer trade in. If you have carmax where you are, you can get a ball park on quick sale value.

I'd be surprised if they give you $1,500, with a slipping transmission they will send it to auction, and generally will give $500 as a token trade in on anything they can't sell on their lot.
I had an '02 Civic in perfect mechanical condition, recently serviced w/ records, excellent paint, 130k miles, and at trade-in they would only give me $2750 and that was after initially offering $2500.
So...good luck. You will never get close to that $4k mark. Probably $1500 like others have said. But they're likely to start the offer at $750, so be prepared to do some negotiating.
