The IS is a compact rear wheel drive car, much more like a BMW 3 series or Infiniti GS. The IS is sportier. Even though it has four doors the rear seat is small. Choice of two V6 engines.

The LS is a large V8 powered rear wheel drive sedan, designed to be a smooth high speed cruiser. It is in the same class as the M-B S-class and BMW 7 series, though the LS is softer. The L version of the LS is the long wheelbase model and has a very roomy rear seat. There are few cars as quiet and as smooth as the LS.

No, get a new car for ~$40k.

You can get a brand spankin new Infiniti G37x (AWD) for $40k (MSRP). Or a new Chrysler 300C if you want something larger and more elegant.

Tilman-

My parents owned an '08 LS460, they purchased it new and recently traded it off for a 2011 CTS Coupe (mom wanted one and when mom's happy, dad is happy). I've driven their LS460 quite a few times and it was a nice vehicle but not worth the sticker of $70K+.

They actually went from an '06 Caddy DTS to an '07 Lexus ES350 to an '08 LS460 and now have an '11 CTS Coupe. Dad always bought Cadillacs but when the ES350 came out, mom decided she wanted a Lexus so he traded off the DTS for an ES350 and my father ended up liking it so much he traded that off for an LS460!

Why exactly do you want an LS460? Style? Name? Luxury?

For a 4 year old Lexus, you can find a NEW vehicle with comparable amenities and luxury for $40K! Know what vehicle I'm particularly impressed with? The new Nissan Maxima's...for the price, they're probably one of the best bargains on the road. Test drove one before and dad commented that the interior was AS NICE as his Lexus for about 1/2 the price.

Nope. A Toyota is the most overpriced car brand in the market, and a Lexus is an overpriced Toyota. Acura and Infiniti are much better Japanese Lux brands.
