Honestly, I don't usually advocate Japanese automobiles because I believe American brands are just as good, BUT if you want a hybrid, the Prius is the best bang-for-the-buck. I was actually talking to a co-worker who has a 3rd generation Prius and he says he can get about 56-57 mpg out of it which I feel is fantastic. I really don't think you find an American hybrid that can deliver those kind of mpg's for the price.
The Ford Focus Hybrid should be the Benchmark Hybrid that is supposed to go to to toe with the Toyota Prius according to Motortrend Magazine.
Just Google it and check it out is my advice and see what you think..Otherwise the only true hybrid Out there that can run with the 2012 Toyota plug-in Prius is the Chevy Volt and well at 40K and no one buying them I would stay away till ford comes out with their Hybrid Focus.
When it comes to hybrid cars Prius really is king but for USA built buying now Ford Fusion. Who knows in several years there are a few new hybrids coming out.

The Volt is sold out. GM has been re-tooling to expand beyond the initial five cities to supply has been limited. I believe the supply is improving and sales are accelerating. Consumer Reports just gave the Volt a Recommended rating.

The Fusion Hybrid is really the only US game in town for a traditional hybrid. The Volt is good, but may not be good for your particular driving style, or even available where you live. I would also echo what others said, you aren't going to beat the Prius.

Interestingly, I saw a Volt at the Chevy dealer in Prosser (small town in eastern WA) this morning. Had "Volt" as a big graphic down the side of it.
Not sure if it was for sale or not. It certainly is an ugly car IMHO.
As Goat has discussed here before, Ford is licensing Toyota's "Synergy Drive" technology, which has yet to be beat in practice, so their hybrid gives better fuel economy than Honda and anyone else who does not use Toyota's patent.
Gm hybrids are a joke. GM never took the hybrid thing seriously. Some of the get worse mileage than their standard gas engine counterparts (even though the marketing says it is one or two MPG better - it isn't).
Ford is the way to go. I am not sure Chrysler has one. I am also not sure that Chrysler is still considered an American car maker. I think I woudl include them, but some people woudl not.

Both the Fusion and Escape hybrids have done real well, but the Escape does not get anything close to 40 mpg.
