So my '03 325i is getting some miles on it and the maintenance costs is unfortunately starting to surpass a reasonable average monthly car payment. Time to upgrade!
Looking for a sport sedan or coupe around 20k, used.
So far I have:
3 series - another, I'd consider going BMW again, but I'm open to others. Audi A4/S4 - mileage and reliability is still important to me G35/G37 - probably the only japanese brand i'd go for Saab - i loved the 9-3 Aero, but I think I'll stay away considering BK Volvo s40 T5 - probably wont even compare to a 3 series, for old people?
I'd get a 2011 Mustang V6 with around 15k miles for ~$21k. 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and 19/31MPG.
Something like this: 2011 Ford Mustang ((6 Speed)) Leather Heated Seating Extra Clean Must See!! (http://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/2851466400.html - broken link)
Couldn't imagine paying $20k for a 3-5 year old used car with 50k miles.
No knock on the Mustang but the OP is looking for a sedan.

Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks.
Aside from maybe adding the CTS your list is fairly complete for that segment.

An uber-low mileage example W203 AMG would be cool.

If you've been pleased with your current 3 Series, I see no reason no to look around for another one. With a $20K budget, getting one any newer than a 2008 328i is going to be nearly impossible, I also can't see spending $20K for a vehicle that is going on 5 years old unless you get a CPO with warranty in tact.
I'd stay away from Saab, nobody knows yet how easy it will be to get replacement parts if something goes wrong. I'm not a fan of Volvo either, pretty bland and certainly doesn't hold a candle to the 3 Series.
The Audi's are nice but again, you'll have to get an older year. The G35/G37 are a good bargain and you could likely get a newer 2009-2010 in your budget. Not a bad deal in my book.
I'd shy away from Mercedes AMG, the repair costs will burst your budget exponentially, not worth the risk.
The only other vehicle I could think of is a 2009 Cadillac CTS but it's also a bit bigger than the vehicles you're looking at. Not quite as sporty as the BMW either but passengers might appreciate the extra room.

He says sedan or coupe in his first post....
If want something rare, get a 2006 Pontiac GTO. LS2 with 400HP/400lb-ft, comfty power leather seats. You can get them for around $17k with under 50k miles. The 6 speed is rated for 25MPG highway. Great comfty cruiser that does the 1/4 in 13 flat
Used car prices are pretty crazy right now. Not sure what your budget is specifically but I think you may have to look at a 2007 to get a 3 series south of 20,000 especially if you want a CPO.
I would also look at the 1 series if you are open to coupes.
If you want more of an econobox with a big engine maybe a Subaru WRX.
