Miata. Seriously. I REALLY wish I could fit because all the guys I see running them at auto-x and club racing circuits have so much fun with them. They're cheap, plentiful, and have a TON of aftermarket support.

Hey guys. What do yo think are the top 6 cars that are best to modify in terms of horsepower/torque easy gains and unlocking potential, handling, fun factor and price?
List the reasons why...
Please no flaming.. and please be ready to backup your arguments with cold facts.
Years ago I drove an old air-cooled VW Bug. That probably has to be the single most-modified car in history.
I ran my mostly stock, except for electronic ignition. But the upgrades were limitless, and the prices weren't all that bad. I've seen Bugs that were cranking out 700hp.
The old VW Bugs were easy to work on, easy to upgrade with low-cost parts, and they were just plain fun to mess with.
Considered by rejected. BUT more than adequate for most driving.
Challenger, Camaro, NA CTS-V, Charger too heavy.
4.6 Mustang insufficient cubes for cheap powa.

Really? You can buy a 2005 GT automatic low miles for less then $15k. Add a blower/tune/slicks for under $9k. Run mid 10's for less then $24k for stone reliable performance.. This was my buds car. The 4.6 3v is an excellent drivetrain..

This.
I outgrew the whole tuner thing in high school when I had a first generation GSX. Good times, but not something I'd do now. The most I'd do now would be shoes, modest drop, and maybe intake/exhaust if I wasn't happy with the way it sounded.

Quite sure the Ford 4.6 V8's are consistently mentioned as being one of the worst performance engines of all time.
For ease of making power, the 03-04 Cobras have to rank quite high, pulley swap and bolt ons and you have killer straight line speed.
My last car was a 2005 GTO, daily driver and ran consistent 11.5's at the track. Traded it in December for a 2009 G8 GT. This is staying stock for a while (wedding saving getting in the way!) but after the wedding I am planning a TVS1900 or trading for a 09-12 CTS-V, have not decided yet.

And what engine was in the 03-04 Cobra? 4.6 V8. Maybe you meant the 3v 4.6s weren't so great.
Not saying it is the absolute best, but I love modified Fieros. With so many relatively easy engine swaps, from turbo 4's to big V8's, and a few suspension upgrades, they can be made into very good handling, fast rides!
