What is with some of these sully names that have nothing to do withthe design?

Skyactive. What does that mean? It applies to engines, body design, even interior components i think and it means nothing at all.

Ecoboost? Meaning what?

There were two or three others I was thinking of, but now I have forgotten. Guess I had better go to sleep.

I wish they would bring back the meaningful marking terms like Hemi or Super Sport which actually carried some meaning.

ecoboost makes some sense, as its an economical engine option to the standard higher output power plant option, yielding the same stats, and boost, since they're turbocharged.

Skyactiv (There is no e at the end for whatever reason) is a name made up by someone in an advertising agency that probably spent a hundred or more hours in meetings with a bunch of others like themselves, then countless hours tossing names at Mazda before it was arrived at.

It's only going to get worse as more and more of the obvious names are used.

I'M gonna take a stab at "skyactiv" as to what it might mean, and how that term may have come about.
Today more than ever, our daily lives, and products we use are satellite controlled, or influenced by them
GPS, as well as cell phones comes to mind, and many vehicles now have a navigation system installed.
I think Mazda took the reality of satellites floating out in space, and took it one step further.
Not that these space objects have anything other than GPS capability, Mazda coupled the process with "future" yet undiscovered technology, and tacked it on to Mazda, hoping that the buying public would think Mazda is way ahead in satellite technology for their vehicles.
These satellites are are above us in the sky, thus, skyactive was the buzz word created by Mazda, and in all reality means absolutely nothing more than a marketing gimmick.
Bob.

Yeah, 'cause names like Firepower and Super Red Ram amd Cobra Jet were such accurate descriptive names for engines back in the day. Listen, there's ALWAYS been names for engine and transmissions and new tech for the day. It's just the way of it and no need to get any deeper than that.

true. It also i think comes into play on how well it "works". We've owned Honda's with vtec (mostly civics) but for most part it wasnt anything we really noticed or felt. It was just there. But on our s2000, when that thing hits vtec it reminds me of secondaries opening up on my old muscle cars(back in the day). So it is something that can be noticed immediately. Now i get it (and frankly see why the tuner kids love it so much, it's addicting to hit it lol).
I can see the "ecoboost" tag as it's not just a good marketing tool but drivers can feel & understand it. But yes some of the other names out there being used just seem so out of place.

Exactly!

When the new 1931 Plymouths with "Floating Power" were introduced, did the engine actually float, or did it just have improved rubber motor mounts?

Was the Crosley really "A fine small car"? Small, yes. Fine...ummm...no.

Despite the image of a rocket on the hood and the slogan "Rocket 88", V-8 Oldsmobiles were powered by internal combustion engines--just like other cars of the time.
Yes, Olds did have a new, powerful engine, but it was not rocket-powered.

If you ordered a '57 Chevy with the new optional fuel-injected 283 V-8, it was called the "Ramjet" engine. Did you think that this car was actually powered by a Ramjet?

How about the turbo-charged compact Olds F-85 that carried the "Jetfire" nameplate. Did anyone really think that this car had a jet engine instead of an internal combustion engine?

Chevrolet Powerglide?
Yeah, a two-speed transmission really helps you to harness the power of your engine. (NOT!)

Even Pontiac's "Wide-Track" slogan was not completely accurate as some Olds models actually had a slightly wider track than comparable Pontiac models.

Slogans and trademarked names that are essentially meaningless have always been a part of branding and advertising, and they will probably always be so.

one of the many winter beaters i had back in the late 70's was a 63? impala w/ a 6cyl and a glide. I could actually push start that car, once we got it rolling in low gear if enough speed built up it would kick the motor over... so maybe the "power" came from it being able to help your engine start lol.

Seems that was the only AT i knew of that allowed one to push start it.

I agree, "Skyactiv" is ridiculous. My dad asked me what that meant a few weeks ago after seeing a commercial, and I had no idea what to tell him.

But then again, most car names don't mean anything. Names like "Camry" and "Passat" and "ZDX" (etc....) are all silly if you ask me.

EcoBoost is pretty straight forward though.
