Okay first off all it's time to put away the "I can't buy a V8 RWD Fusion so NASCAR sucks" line. It's played, it's stupid, and it just doesn't fly. I admit I used to say the same thing but then I realized. It's our fault we can't buy cars like that. You people, and by you people I mean us - the consumers stopped buying RWD v8 cars. You wanted cheaper more fuel efficient vehicles so the market responds with FWD 4 and 6s. Oh sure every so often the manufacturers will bring us a Charger or a 300 but most people end up with the pansy V6 models. Chevy makes the SS and wimps complain about the front bumper or that it costs too much or they can't get a stick. Boo hoo, you weren't going to buy one any way.
NASCAR stopped evolving because the technology reached a pinnacle. Nothing else the auto industry created would make the cars any faster. Plus the racing tech that did come out is harder to regulate. They want the cars to be close so that there's rubbin and passing and lead changes. Watching one car doing a parade lap at the head of a field in an F1 race is not entertaining to the typical NAsCAr fan. If you go to a typical dragstrip in the south or dirt track you will see basic old cars with powerful chevy and ford small blocks. You will NOT see people racing V6 camrys and impalas around. So that is why NASCAR stays with pushrods and carbs. It would be stupid to leave it. You can watch showroom racing in a variety of sports car series. They just have to do things like add ballast to the faster cars and they tend to stick to road courses where spectator ship isn't as high. Someone said NASCAR was never about the drivers but about the cars. That's wrong. Those early moonshiners turned into hometown heroes and then into legends. It's about both car and driver and brand. The general lee just wasn't the same without Bo and Luke. All we learn from F1 is that if you spend millions of dollars on a car and use exotic materials you can make it go very fast. Can't buy a one seated open wheel carbon tubbed winged monster at the dealership either.
The 80s and 90s? Senna won the Monaco GP in 1987 with a car that had active suspension. In the early 90s, cars were equipped with traction control, launch control and ABS. Current F1 cars do not have any of these features.
Senna also had a manual gearbox and he didn't have KERS or DRS.
Anyone that thinks that driving a NASCAR car around any oval at a competitive speed is easy has absolutely no clue at all.
