I found myself doing this recently. Names given to the various cars I've owned in the last 5 years:

2002 Subaru Impreza: Sue (ex-wife named this one)
1994 Mazda Protege: Tealie (due to its color)
1987 Porsche 924S: Ursula
1989 Mazda 323 GTX: Zoomer
1989 Ford Taurus SHO: Toro
1995 Saab 900 turbo: Ingrid
1996 Nissan Maxima: Maxie (wife named this one)

I name most inanimate objects, unfortunately. It's kind of a bad habit!

1994 Mercury Topaz - Spuffy
1998 Nissan Altima - George
2003 Nissan Altima - Oliver
1997 Ford Taurus - Toby (when the compressor broke during my first summer in FL, I included much stronger names, also...)
2007 Ford Focus - Freddie

LOL.. I had a 1978 Fiat X-19 about 22 years ago, but I don't think I can repeat the names I gave it...

I always just considered an auto as just a collection of parts (some better than others) so with a history over the years of dozens of cars I have never named one... although I have called a few names when things did not go well.

Do people name other inanimate items? …homes, furniture, lawnmowers?

About five years ago I started a garden business called Dragonslayer Garden Service. Seven years ago I lowered the height of a 10 foot tall bush to 3 feet tall. It had seven humps and a head with eyes, horns, nose and mouth. Everyone started calling me the dragon slayer. I had a flying dragon on my business card for a few years and had it done as a tattoo on my right calf when I turned 44. A year and a half ago I had a decal of the flying dragon done 3 feet by 2 feet and had it applied to the hood of my new truck.

My 2006 honda ridgeline is amazon green and I call him the Green Dragon.
