I'm looking at a 1994 Ford F350 extended, Diesel, 255xxx miles. In person it looks descent and runs good I just don't know how much these go for and how good is the diesel engine, believe it's a 7.3. Would mpg be better compared to a gas engine? Guy is asking $3000, I thought that was too much. I want to give him an offer that's fair to both of us and not lowball him, and not pay too much either. Thanks
the 7.3 diesel is one of the best on the market, too bad ford didnt see it that way. yes mpgs will be better with the diesel, figure the van would get something like 9-12 with a gas engine, and with the diesel should be around 17-20. as for price, $3000 is probaly a good price depending on the condition of the van, i would offer him $2500 and probably settle for around $2750.
So, the mpg is good. How good is the mileage for a diesel and what would be the equivalent to a gas engine? A friend of mine told me diesels last almost twice as long, true?

7.3 was a good engine for Ford.....but no way is a 250K mile, 20 year old van going to get anywhere near 17-20 mpg. It is a big, heavy box and wind resistance is a problem for vans.

why not? my F250 with the 6.9 got 21mpg pretty much all the time. the difference in aerodynamics and weight isnt much different between the two.

$3k is decent price if it has had front end work done recently. (That SHOULD be the only expensive issue @ only 250k miles).
Was it private or FLEET or rental? Diesels need Luv'n to keep clattering to a million miles. (Actually they just need GOOD oil and GOOD filters and DRY fuel)
